She was born on October 30, 1935, to Leonard and Susie Smith in Big Spring, Texas. Leola was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful servant of God whose life reflected kindness, strength, and unwavering faith. She married the love of her life, Lindell Newton, in December of 1955, and together they built a home centered on faith, family, and hard work.
After dedicating herself to raising her four children, Leola worked for Wheat’s Furniture before later becoming the bookkeeper for the family farm and the cotton gin owned by the family. She took great pride in supporting her family and serving wherever she was needed.
A dedicated member of Midway Baptist Church since 1962, Leola lived a life grounded in Christian faith. She loved the Lord deeply and was an example of grace, compassion, and quiet strength to everyone who knew her.
Leola found joy in life’s simple blessings. She loved spending time with her family, tending to her garden, and reading whenever she had the chance. She also enjoyed traveling and capturing photographs of the beautiful places and moments she experienced along the way.
She is survived by her sons, Steve Newton and wife Debbie Newton; Larry Newton and wife Diane Newton; and Gary Newton and wife Melissa Newton. She also leaves behind nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren who will forever cherish her love, wisdom, and gentle spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Susie Smith; her beloved husband, Lindell Newton; her daughter, Peggy Waters; and her sisters, Mary Sue Walker and Helen Rowe.
Though her family grieves her passing, they rejoice in knowing that she is now at peace in the presence of her Savior. Her legacy of faith, love, and devotion to family will continue to live on in all who were blessed to know her.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Parkview Nursing Home for the tender love and care they provided during her stay with them.
