Leatrice Joy (Ross) Whitehead, 79, of Big Spring, died on Friday, July 13, 2007, at her residence. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rev. Joel Miller, officiating. She was born in Big Spring, Texas on November 10, 1927. She was preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice (McNew) Nall and Step-father, Jack Nall.Ms. Whitehead grew up in Big Spring, Texas and graduated from Big Spring High School. She was part of the first graduating class of Howard College. She went on to receive a degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin.Ms.Whitehead pursued a career as a public relations professional in Houston, Texas for over 30 years, receiving recognitions and awards for her work. She retired and returned to Big Spring at which time she worked for Howard College as a Director of Development and later worked for the Big Spring Herald where she wrote a popular local column, "Tidbits". She was actively involved in supporting numerous civic and arts groups in both Big Spring and Houston. Her goal was to give something back to her community.Ms. Whitehead is survived by her son, Patt Lilly and wife, Sherri of St. Joseph, Missouri; grandchildren, Claire Lilly of Lago Vista, Texas, Zachary Kerns and wife, Rosemary of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jenny Cathcart and husband, Mark of St. Joseph, Missouri; three great grandchildren and long-time friend, Tip Anderson of Big Spring, Texas.The family suggests memorials be made to the Big Spring Humane Society, PO Box 823, Big Spring, Texas 79721 or to the St. Joseph Public Library, 927 Felix Street, St. Joseph, MO 64501.Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
