LaVerne Jones was born in Swanton, Ohio, August 22, 1910, and moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1926. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Psychiatric Social Service, LaVerne married Ted Jones, a geologist. They lived in Missouri and Arkansas for a year and moved to Midland, Texas in 1934, where LaVerne resided until her death.La Verne was a charter member of the Children's Service League and remained active in that organization as a volunteer at the City Health Unit until 1994. Additionally, her work included volunteering for many years as a social worker at the Big Spring State Hospital, at homes for the mentally ill veterans and at Hospice of Midland. She served three terms (9 years) on the Child Welfare Board and was a member of Family Counseling Services and Friends of the Library. She received the Community Service Award from the Midland Optimist Club.As a senior citizen, LaVerne began painting and her paintings received recognition not only in Midland, but also in Austin, where she won awards two consecutive years in the "Art in Ageless" contest, staged by the Texas Homes and Services for the Aging.She is survived by a daughter, Susan Loftin and her husband Steve, of Walnut Creek, Ca. and a son, Thomas Jones and his wife Lynn, of Minneapolis, Mn., and three grandsons Mark Loftin, Craig Loftin and Walter Jones.The family requests memorials to Hospice of Midland, PO Box 2621, Midland, TX 79702.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
