Kawana Smith Newman, 86, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, June 22, 2008, in an Odessa hospice facility. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rev. Daniel Armstrong, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Stanton and Rev. David Harp, pastor of First Baptist Church of Stanton, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.She was born on July 13, 1921, in Burkburnett, Texas and married Thomas E. Newman on March 8, 1941 in Stanton, Texas. He preceded her in death on January 20, 1975.Kawana was a member of the former Home Demonstration Club of Lomax and a member of First United Methodist Church of Stanton. She was a homemaker.Survivors include two sons, Tommy Newman and wife, Marilyn of Stanton, and Fred Newman and wife, Debra of Big Spring; three grandsons, Kevin Newman and wife, Mandy of Stanton, Robert Newman and wife, Cyndi of Pleasanton, and Tye Newman of San Angelo; one granddaughter, Kody Newman of Stanton; two great granddaughters, Dakota of Stanton and Arianna of Pleasanton, and three great grandsons, Keith of Pleasanton and Flint and Tristan both of Stanton. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Wallace Risher Smith and Ina (Smitty) McGowan; her step father, Fred McGowan and two grandsons, Kendall Newman and Clinton Newman.
