Our blue eyed matriarch June Randolph Weeks went to be with the Lord on November 27, 2024 at the spry age of 88. She left in her joyful wake not only a flurry of children but a love of all things pink, an insatiable appreciation for Elvis, and 187 chairs. Which is ironic considering she never sat for long.
June was born the middle of three children to Ernest and Imogene Randolph in May 1936. She grew up fancy free on the red dirt plains of West Texas. Following on the heels of her big sister Jean ‘Tootsie’ and carrying her baby brother Clay on her hip. As a young teenager, she caught the eye and heart of our dad James Derb Weeks. To which I refer to as the greatest love story ever told. Marrying in the spring of 1974 June and Derb had a houseful… with six teenagers and a new baby of their own to follow.
June’s love for her family was unmatched. She had a fierce optimism and didn’t so much as walk through life, but flittered. Her favorite days were spent among her flowers with her hands in the dirt of her garden. She used the phrase ‘bloom where you are planted’ often and she lived by that.
Nothing of June’s was off limits… Grandkids playing dress up in her clothes, makeup, and shoes. A candy drawer at toddler height that was available and encouraged by both Poppy and Kiki/Poppy and Mimi/grandma and grandpa. All the grandkids had their own special name for them, and that too, was just fine.
June sparkled… From her shiny pink nails, dangling earrings, and rings on every finger. But what shined the most was her spirit. People were drawn to her. Pulled in by her sweet smile and joyful spirit. She was and still is– a hand over your belly from laughing till it hurts, a warm hand on your cheek when you needed it, a dance under the moon and a childlike appreciation for life.
