Joseph, known as Joe, was born on December 20, 1931, in Coleman, Texas. He grew up in Central Texas and later relocated to Colorado City during his high school years. Joe served his country with honor in the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea from 1951 to 1954, achieving the rank of Corporal. His exemplary service earned him several accolades, including a Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal.
In December 1955, Joe met the love of his life, Lula Kay Jarman, and their hearts became inseparable. On September 8, 1956, they exchanged vows and embarked on a journey of love and commitment that spanned an incredible 66 years. Together, they built a beautiful family of 40, leaving a lasting impact on generations to come.
After a dedicated career of 23 years, Joseph retired from the Texas Employment Commission as an Area Manager. He was a longstanding member of College Baptist Church, where his faith in God remained unwavering, even in the face of adversity. Enduring over 30 surgeries throughout his lifetime, he displayed steadfast strength and resilience, often brightening the hospital with his quick wit and infectious smile.
Joe had an immense love for his family and cherished time spent with and for them. He could often be found in his workshop constructing remarkable pinewood derby cars with his sons, building immaculate doll furniture sets for his daughter, and generally tinkering on any project with his grandchildren. He was an enthusiastic admirer of aviation, finding joy in both model airplanes and air shows. This fascination in conjunction with his patriotism, later led to his becoming an avid collector of all things bald eagle. Poppa Joe’s grand and great-grandchildren hold countless cherished memories of joyfully riding on his motorized wheelchair and racing with his old pushchairs.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Kay Wallis, and their three children: Steve Wallis (wife, Vickie), Brooks Wallis (wife, Susan), and Kathi Wallis. He leaves behind a legacy of love in his grandchildren: Lisa Pearson (husband, Jon), Stephen Wallis (wife, Mary), Brandon Wallis (wife, Melinda), Zachary Wylie, Dustin Wylie (wife, Tiffany), Chase Wylie, K’Leigh McCarter (husband, David), and Reagan Reedy (husband, Max). Additionally, he is survived by 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind countless friends, whose lives were forever touched by his genuine kindness and unwavering friendship.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Richard Sealey Wallis, mother, Eva Muriel Brooks Wallis, and sister, Nina Lorene Wallis Merket.
Though we mourn the loss of Joe, we find comfort in the memories we shared and the enduring legacy of love and faith he leaves behind, knowing his soul rests in eternal peace. “My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.” Psalm 119.50.
