Jones “Odell” Smith, 78, of Midland, passed away January 12, 2015. The family will be receiving guests from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm, Friday, January 16, 2015 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel.Odell Smith was born June 30, 1936 to Tom Willie Smith and Mary Irene Jones in Belton, Texas. Odell knew when he was 5 years old that he wanted to be a policeman when he grew up. He loved law enforcement and became an MP in the Army. After his discharge in 1961, he worked for the City of Midland Police Department and later as an officer for the Texas Department of Public Safety. He retired from the Midland College Police Department in late 2007 at the age of 71. He also worked as Right-of-Way and as a claims representative for Sun Oil, Co. in the 1980’s. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Emmaus Community since 1996.He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Linda Smith; daughters, Leisha Smith and Phylis Meek of Ingram, Texas; daughter, Sheila Wiedeman of Midland, Texas; granddaughters, Rachel Patteson and Sarah Weideman, all of Midland, Texas; daughter, Paula Hassinger and husband, David, of Boise, Idaho; and granddaughters, Sydney and Whitney Dell of Boise, Idaho; two sisters, Clarine Deaver and Eloise Wilson, both of Belton, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents, Tom Willie and Mary Irene Smith, and two brothers, James R. Smith and T.W. Smith, Jr.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Sgt.
