Johnny (J.R.) Newcomer went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 21, 2023. He was born June 12, 1933, in Big Spring, Texas, to Eddie and Lou Ella Newcomer. He graduated from Knott High School in 1950, then was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 where he served a tour of duty during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge in 1955, he attended Texas Technological College in Lubbock, Texas, where he met his wife, Edith (Nita) Murray. They were married on November 27, 1957.
J.R. was a long-time member of Kelview Heights Baptist Church in Midland, and was currently a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Big Spring. Throughout his life, he faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher and choir member, as his faith in Jesus Christ was the motivator of his service.
J.R. is preceded in death by his wife Nita Newcomer, his son-in-law Joe Lilly, his parents Eddie Newcomer and Lou Ella Newcomer, his brother Earl Newcomer, and his sisters Merle Newcomer, Rosie Misek, Thelma Walker, and Edna Chrestman.
He is survived by his daughters Donna Story and Susan Lilly, his sister Eva Helms, his grandsons Derek Story, Philip Story, Brandon Lilly and Martin Lilly, six great-grandsons, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at Kelview Heights Baptist Church Chapel in Midland, Texas.
