We became acquainted with John thru his art. In a short time, he was entering juried shows, and getting accepted, to his complete surprise! Since his retirement, we were so looking forward to seeing lots more of his creativity. He will be missed in the art community. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and those who knew him well.

John Cooper was a rare man. He was at once a committed Christian believer and successful in the business of life. He was a renaissance man. He was a gentleman of great nobility, generosity, thoughtfulness, learning, wisdom, and was a person of courtly mien and impeccable manners. He was also a proud civil engineer who wanted things just so, exact, and in the right proportions. Though he was uncommonly intelligent, he pushed himself on none and was modest in relation to all. This made him not only a wise leader but effective in all his pursuits. The hard-working business owner of impeccable integrity in relation to his clients was also the sensitive husband and loving father that Lana and Christopher enjoyed having around. He cherished them. And he cherished all of us who were his friends. He loved this world and he loved West Texas. He appreciated on a very deep level the wonder and beauty, not only of the natural world, but of the natural world as host and witness of our human race, our sins and our glories, our humanity and quest for more than we are at present. This is what he understood so well about our mission at Trinity School: that we were not educating the mind alone, or developing skills for the work force, but we were educating the whole person to excellence. His early paintings show the engineer at work. They are precision statements of how he saw the sunrise, the sunset, the sky, the clouds, the coming storms, and the local houses, ranch buildings, livestock, fenceposts, and pump-jacks. As he progressed in his art, he allowed his emotions to enter more deeply into the effects at the end of his brushes. These later paintings began to surprise us with shocks of color and unexpected choreography. John Cooper thought the highest calling of any person—the greatest single privilege of any man’s life—is to be a disciple of Christ Jesus. John worked on his relationship with the Lord. He experienced his faith as being a daily, moment-by-moment member of the Body mystical. John backed the Church in spite of her foibles and failures. He was utterly committed to the Lord. And the Lord was committed to him. He told us about miracles. Remember the strange stories of tortilla chips and single sheets of paper standing on end? I had the impression that John’s prayers were answered very quickly, one way or the other. “He’ll let me know at some point,” he would sometimes say. He asked for God’s grace and for God’s doing this or doing that, please: And he waited for the Lord to let him know what He was going to do or not do. Husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and dear, dedicated, loyal friend. This was John in an exemplary way. But his relationship with Christ was his top priority. And it showed, every day that great Light of God showed in John Cooper. The beautiful new church building at Christ Church is his greatest memorial. Every detail mattered to him. John was a well-educated and well-read man. He never rested from learning new things, reading recommended books, and thinking deeply about it all in relation to the Gospel. He was a focused Christian. He wanted the Good News that is Christ Jesus to flourish in all its ways. Many of us were surprised by John’s departure. Not a few of us will mourn for him for years to come. On the other hand, I have not met a single person who is particularly worried about John dying – about Where he is, or what he is doing in his new abode. We have great confidence about John’s whereabouts, where there is no pain and only glory and joy. I expect that John would say to us now: “To live is Christ, to die is gain.” And I say Amen to that!
