John W. Young, 96, passed away Friday, August 5, 2016. He was born on June 30, 1920 in Beeville, Texas to Lula Mae and Warren Young. He grew up there and, a few years after graduating from Beeville High School, he went to work for Cities Service Oil Company on March 31, 1941.John was married to Margaret Lawson on June 7, 1941 and they enjoyed 68 wonderful years of marriage. He served in the Army's 4th Infantry Division in WWII, landing on Utah Beach on D-Day. He was also re-called to Korea. In 1952, John and Margaret returned to live in Midland where he continued his career as a landman. After 42 years with Cities Service, he retired as Regional Landman on January 1, 1983. This was then followed by 25 years of traveling all over North America in their motor home, seeing the world, and accumulating hundreds of great stories. John Young never met a stranger and rarely forgot a name.John belonged to a number of professional associations including the Permian Basin Landmen's Association who recognized him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church for over 50 years. John was Past President of the Midland Rotary Club and became an honorary member after 43 years of perfect attendance. He was also a Board member and supporter of the Recording Library of West Texas.John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Margaret, and his sister, Inah May Ritz. He is survived by his son, Dr. John Young, Jr. and his wife, Pam, of Midland; his daughter, Alice Freidline, and her husband, Roger, of Midland; four grandchildren, Greg Freidline and his wife, Emily of Alpine TX, Eric Freidline and his fiancé, Cindy Lopez, of Dallas, Lindsey Cunningham and her husband, David, of Keller, and Hillary Young of Ft. Worth; Lindsey and Hillary’s mother, Diane Young, of Ft. Worth; three great-grandchildren, Ashton Young and Sadie Cunningham of Keller and Izaiah Young of Ft. Worth; his brother, E.W. Young and wife, Rosie, of Beeville; and his special friend, Martha Dwyer of Midland.The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00PM at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Midland. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 10:00AM at Resthaven Memorial Park. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 2:00PM at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with Reverend Kathryn Boren officiating.The family would like to express their gratitude to all of the staff at Manor Park and Hospice of Midland.
