John Thomas Strachan, 86, of Midland, Texas, passed away April 27, 2022 after a brief illness.
Born September 1, 1935 to Fraser and Cecelia Strachan in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from Hyde Park High School in 1953, he went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts at Hillsdale College where he graduated Salutatorian. He went on to receive his Masters of Education from Indiana State Teachers College in Terre Haute, Indiana. John proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserve, HHB 434th Field Artillery Brigade and was Honorably Discharged in 1967.
John taught school several years before beginning a career in 1967 at The Rio Grande Press in Glorieta, NM as co-owner and editor where they reprinted books on Southwestern History, Indian Arts and Crafts.
Retiring in 2001, John moved to Midland “because of its size, attractiveness and the absence of snow,” where he resided until his passing. He attended Grace Presbyterian Church.
John will always be remembered as a kind, thoughtful and humble man with a gentle spirit. He had a passion for music (still owning a console record player and vast record collection) and acute attention to detail. John was was an all around good guy.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Fraser and Cecelia Strachan and his younger brother Bobby Strachan. He is survived by his brother William F. (Bill) (Stephanny) Strachan of Baraboo, Wisconsin; Nephew, Tom (Linda) Strachan of Baraboo, Wisconsin; Nephew, Jim (Tara) Strachan of St. Charles, Illinois, Niece, Jennie (Jeff) Thuemmler of Colgate, Wisconsin; 9 Great Nieces and Nephews; Michael (Michelle), Domink, Jaxon, Addison, Ryne, Ainsley, Reese, Reilly and Brody; 1 Great-Great Niece Alayna.
We would like to thank Hospice of Midland for their care and kindness during John’s illness and decline, Cheryl Homsher, Pastor, Grace Presbyterian Church of Midland, TX for her visits and prayers over John, Glenn and Diana Miller and various friends who visited and lifted John in prayer.
