John Stephen (Steve) Guyton, 78, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 4, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 6, 1937 in Shreveport, Louisiana.Steve had a wonderful childhood growing up in Shreveport. He attended High School and graduated from George School in Newtown, Pennsylvania. He continued his education and graduated from Colgate University where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in June 1959. He majored in geology and minored in economics. He was a member of ATO Fraternity and made many lifelong friends with his fraternity brothers. He was also a member of the Junior Honor Society and Manager of the football team. Steve then went on to attend the University of Michigan where he received a Master of Science Degree in Geology in 1960.Steve was an independent oil operator/consultant for various oil and gas ventures. He has been associated with Riviera Energy Corporation for the past ten years. He has consulted for and worked with many companies over his career including: Enhanced Oil Resources, Dan A. Hughes Company, Belcor (formerly Transierra Exploration Company) as Vice President, Exploration, MGF Oil Corporation as Vice President, Exploration and Pennzoil Company (formerly Union Producing Company) as a geologist and geological scout.Steve was a member of several professional associations including a 55 year membership with American Association of Petroleum Geologist (Certified Petroleum Geologist #1710), South Texas Geological Society and West Texas Geological Society. (Rev. 10-10)Steve spent most of his adult life in Midland doing what he loved best, working as a geologist. He loved West Texas and the many friends he made in the oil business. If you were lucky enough to have Steve as a friend you knew you had a friend for life. He enjoyed road trips with friends and family, explaining the formations and could spot an oil rig miles away. He loved all kinds of traveling and exploring new places, his two favorite cities were San Francisco and London, U.K. He would ride the subways or get on the tube and just see where it would take him. His other passion was education, which was instilled in him by his mother. He supported and contributed to the education of his children and grandchildren and it delighted him to see them pursuing their dreams, going to college, getting a higher education and receiving their degrees and diplomas. He was always encouraging.Steve was preceded in death by his father, John Thomas Guyton; his mother, Margaret Hickman Guyton; sister, Judith Margaret Pritchett; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Burbank.He is survived by his wife, Katherine Bassett Guyton of Midland; daughters, Kimberly Susan Daugherty and husband, David, of Midland; Juliet Hickman Burbank and husband, Glenn, of Spring Branch, TX; their mother, Teresa “Sam” Guyton of Midland; brother, Tom Guyton and wife, Brenda, of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Matthew Daugherty and wife, Tiffany, Brent Daugherty, Nickolas Daugherty, Kate Daugherty, Sean Daugherty, Michael Burbank and wife, Katy, Stephen Burbank, Kimmy Burbank, and Hannah Burbank; great-grandchild, Kale Daugherty; brother-in-law, Joe Pritchett of Calendar Lake, TX; and many numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.The family wishes to thank the following people for their wonderful care and support: Brad from Nurses Unlimited; Leslie with Star Care; the Staff at Midland Memorial Hospital- especially the nurses, Kali, Sarah, Anna, and Aimee; Shari with Hospice of Midland; and Teresa and Candice with Dr. Modi’s office at Baylor Hospital in Ft. Worth, TX.Graveside services will be on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 11:00am at Serenity Memorial Gardens, 6800 S Hwy 349, Midland, TX. Rusty Buchanan will be officiating the ceremony. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Guyton, David Daugherty, Glenn Burbank, Matthew Daugherty, Brent Daugherty, Michael Burbank, Nickolas Daugherty, Stephen Burbank, Sean Daugherty, Kale Daugherty, and Bradley Henserling.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to a charity of your choice.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
