John (Lefty) Glennan went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 22, 2016. He grew up in Southern Oklahoma and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1942. In October 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy and was detached to the U.S. Marines, 1st Division, as a Navy Medical Corpsman, and transferred to the Pacific Theater. Lefty spent the remainder of the war with different units in the South Pacific Islands, one being the VMF 214 “Black Sheep” squadron. While in El Centro, California he met the love of his life, a fellow Marine, Jewell Wilson. They were married after his discharge in March 1946. They had a life and love matched by very few. They spent the next 68 years together, and never had an argument before her passing in November 2014. They moved to Midland in 1947 and he worked in the construction trade for his brother, T. Jack Glennan. Lefty worked on many office buildings downtown – the Magnolia Bldg., Tower Bldg., and Midland High School. In 1950 Lefty was recalled into the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and spent 17 months in San Diego, California. Upon discharge they moved back to Midland and he went to work for Magnolia Oil Co. (now Exxon Mobil). He retired in 1984 with 31 years of service. He spent several years coaching Little League and Cub Scouts with their son, John Jr. His retirement years were spent in his workshop making items for his family and friends. He was a loving husband of 68 years, father, and PaPaw to his grand and great grandchildren. His greatest enjoyment in retirement was having the kids, grand and great grand kids at their lake house where he loved to fish and watch the family enjoy swimming, boating and jet skiing. He loved the Dallas Cowboys and followed them from their very first game.He lived his life according to the scriptures and believed that if he could not say something good about the person, then say nothing. He never met a person he did not like and did not think the world of him. He was a long time member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Jewell, his parents, two brothers and sisters-in-law, T.
