John E. Freeman, 83, passed away peacefully July 11, 2026. A memorial service will be held at
2:00 p.m.,Tuesday, July, 14, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Big Spring with Mark Lindsay
officiating.

John was born January 6, 1943, in Big Spring, Texas, to John E. Freeman, Sr., and Christine
Curry Freeman. He married Carolyn Hoover December 27, 1963, in Big Spring at Wesley
Methodist Church. He was a long-time member of First Methodist Church.

John graduated from Big Spring High School in 1961, enlisted in the United States Army from
1963 to 1966 as a Communication Specialist, stationed at Fort Shafter, Hawaii. After that, he
graduated from North Texas with a Bachelor’s of Business Degree, followed by a Master’s of
Business from Sul Ross, and completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration
from Kennedy Western University. He was enrolled in many organizations in the community.
John was the current Chairman of the Board at Howard College, having served since 2000.
He spent many hours restoring classic cars, including his pride and joy, the 1961 Corvette.
Playing golf was his favorite past-time for many years.

In 1978, John along with Tommy and Russ Rutledge started Fiberflex. In 1985, he started
Freecom, Inc., now known as CeRam-Kote Coatings, Inc., which is currently operated by his
sons, Kevin and Chad.

John is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Carolyn Hoover Freeman; two sons: Kevin
Freeman (Karen), Chad Freeman (Kara); four grandchildren who affectionately called him Papa: Chandler Wigington (Tyler), Sterling Freeman, Ross Freeman (Angie), Ty Freeman (Zoie
Herring), and precious great-grandson, Wyatt Hoover Wigington; two sisters, Edith Franklin
(Carl) and Clara Chisholm, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his parents.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jay Hoover, Gen. Carl Franklin, Robert Moore, Russ Rutledge,
Dr. Cheri Sparks, and Jack Richardson.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Chairman John Freeman Scholarship at

Our prayers are with John’s family. I first met John the first day of school in the first grade at College Heights. Mrs. Spencer was our teacher. We graduated together in 1961. I teased John over the years about his being old. His birthday is January 6 and mine is January 13. As I said before, our prayers are with John and his great family. Dan/Danny Wise

John Freeman was one of those people who showed up in your life exactly when you needed him most. During some of my most uncertain years, John and Carolyn didn't just offer kind words, they offered real support. John gave me a job when I needed one and even covered a semester of college when I couldn't do it on my own. He never made me feel like a burden for it. He just believed I was worth the investment, and that changed everything. I carry a piece of who John was with me in how I try to show up for others. He modeled what it looks like to quietly, generously make a difference in someone's life not for recognition, but just because it was the right thing to do. My condolences to Carolyn, Chad, Kevin and the extended Freeman family.
