John David Topping, 76, of Big Spring, passed away Friday, December 6, 2024. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, December 20, 2024 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 pm, at Abilene State Veterans Cemetery.

John was born April 30, 1948 in Rochester, New York to parents Helen (Martin) and Charles G. Toppings, Sr. He served in the United States Air Force. He married Shirlene Richters June 10, 1973 at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring. He was a pilot for many airlines retiring from Delta.

He is survived by his wife Shirlene Topping; sister-in-law Linda Coates (Ralph); brother-in-law Don Richters (Jenny Sue); nieces and nephews Charles Topping, Brian Topping, Dale Coates, Matthew Coates, Rocky Coates, Jason Richters, Jenna Lee Hamilton, Steve Spears, Karen Waters, Delinda Reid, Darrell Spears, Alex Richters, Marcus Richters, Jeff Richters, Amy Evans, Brenda Thomas, Todd Darden, Scott Darden, Carey Darden, Eric Davis, Terry McMahan, Sara Fontana, Ricky Richters, Sean Foster, Jennifer Foster, and numerous other relatives, great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers Martin Lewis Topping and Charles G. Topping, Jr.

To John’s family, I flew many trips with Captain John Topping. John was always a professional. He came to work with a smile on his face. John was always kind, helpful, and laughed at my jokes. Going to work with a crew you trust, admire, and respect matters. I always smiled when I saw his name on the sign in sheet, “ Oh boy, John Topping”! Thank you John for safety concerns and your big smile and laugh!

We were hired close together for Southern Airways in 1977! I believe we flew the “metro” together as new hires and I’m sure Top could’ve written a book about our experiences on that aircraft. Top was a joy to be around and one of the most caring people I’ve ever known! See you later, brother!

Top was my C-130 Hercules aircraft commander in the 773rd Tactical Airlift Squadron at Dyess AFB, Abilene, Texas in the mid 70’s. Certainly, as a pilot, he loved to fly, but he was much more than that: such an intelligent, compassionate and caring man. And my friend! God has blessed many of us with Top’s presence in our lives and with the memories we have shared. May he rest in peace.

John was a great guy and will be truly missed. We were hired at Southern airlines together in 1977. One of the good guys. Rest in peace my friend.

I'll always remember John with his laughter and a smile. He was a true friend.
