John Bryant Huckabay, Jr. passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018. He was 89 years old, born on March 23, 1928 in Slaton, Texas to John Bryant, Sr. and Girlie Huckabay.As the child of a Santa Fe Railroad Engineer, he and his family followed numerous moves across the country during his schooling, but high school led him back to Slaton High where he participated in football, basketball, and graduated in 1945. He was a part time employee for Santa Fe Railroad during high school and early college freshman at Texas Tech before taking his tour in the 11th Army Airborne Division Paratroopers in Japan. After his discharge, he returned to Texas Tech, and while working with City of Lubbock Engineering he completed his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1950.In that same year, John married Bobbi Cowan where they shortly moved to Midland and remained there for the rest of his life. They were married 67 years. Their first son, John Bryant Huckabay III born 1954, was followed by his second son, Paul Brent Huckabay, in 1958.John is survived by his wife, Bobbi Huckabay, sons Bryant and wife Jenni, Brent and wife Suzanne, five grandchildren: Grant, Gretchen, Gabe, Paige, and Jack (John Bryant IV), and four great grandchildren: Keegan, Luke, Iri and Cooper.As a passionate Certified Petroleum Landman, John worked for Phillips Petroleum, Great Western Drilling, Monsanto, LaGuna Petroleum, Superior and Mobil. He was well known as both a seasoned professional and a great mentor of young landmen. He retired from his position as Land Manager at Mobil Oil Company in 1992 but continued to pursue independent land work until 2013.John was a devoted husband, father, teacher, counselor and elder. He served for 24 years as the office of elder in the Golf Course Road Church of Christ.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Golf Course Rd Church of Christ, officiated by Sam Soleyn of Albuquerque NM., Doug Allen of Lubbock and Tim Baugh of Midland.—Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch & Crematory of Midland.
