John Arthur Odum, 59, passed away on Thursday, February 10th 2022 at Sterling Hills Rehabilitation Center located in Sweetwater, Texas.
Private graveside rites were held on Tuesday, February 22nd 2022 at Resthaven Cemetery in Midland, Texas, officiated by Pastor Steve Schorr of First Presbyterian Church.
John was born on December 6th, 1963, in Maracaibo, Venezuela to Arthur M. and Marillyn “Bitsy” Odum, while his father was on State Department Assignment with Classified Intelligence. John’s father’s occupation took the family to several countries. The family resided in Venezuela, Moscow, Russia, London, UK and Finland, EU.
John had attended schools located in Great Falls, and McLean, Virginia. He attended Flint Hill Preparatory School located in Oakton, Virginia in Fairfax County. John was a 1982 graduate of Flint Hill. John attended Photography classes at Midland College after following his family to Texas. He loved being behind the camera.
John’s love and passion for fast cars, truck and motorcycles led him to Phoenix, Arizona where he received his training and was a graduate of Universal Technical Institute of Arizona 1987-1989 John later suffered a brain aneurism along with a massive stroke which took him in a different direction for his career. John began working in the Educational department.
He worked for many years in the school system. He worked with Special education at Bonham Elementary School, Bynum School and last for High Sky Children’s Ranch. John worked until his disabilities took over.
John had many hobbies which included his love for the outdoors, hunting, fishing camping out especially around the Big Bend area.
John A. Odum had a great love and respect for his family. He enjoyed family cookouts and reunions and didn’t miss a chance to tell the cooks how to prep and cook the meal.
John is survived by Sherry Boyd Odum, caretaker and sister-in-law; Harold Odum, caretaker and cousin; nephew Britt Harbin and wife Kirby, niece BranDee Harbin; great nieces Brady, Maddie, Scarlett and Blake, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and relative and special friend Mrs. Sudy Bedford.
He is preceded in death by his father, Arthur M. Odum; mother, Marillyn “Bitsy” Odum; brother, Christopher Odum; relative and special friend H.G. Bedford.
