Joel R. Miller passed away at his home on June 29, 2013 with his family by his side. Joel was born September 23, 1931 in Wichita Falls to Loren K. and Monte Agnes Miller. He graduated from Rusk High School in l948 and then attended East Texas State (now Texas A&M Commerce) for two years. He transferred to The University of Texas at Austin and graduated in l953 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He served in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Germany in the Quarter Masters Division for three years and returned home with many stories of his time in the service and his travels throughout Germany on Uncle Sam.In l956, he returned to Midland and started his career with Texaco. In l959, Joel joined Manor Oil Company, where he worked for three years until it dissolved. He then joined the investment-banking firm of Carl H. Pforzheimer & Company in New York City in August of 1962. Mr. Joe Pevehouse frequently came to New York and on numerous occasions would visit with Joel. Mr. Pevehouse told Joel if he ever wanted to get back to Texas to let him know. In l966, Joel took him up on his offer, returning to Midland to work for Mr. Pevehouse at Adobe Oil Company, where he was instrumental in taking the Adobe stock public first on the over-the-counter market and then the American Stock Exchange. He worked for Adobe until 1971, when he and Jay Eugene Floyd formed the partnership of Miller & Floyd. The partnership lasted 20 years and was dissolved in 1991 so the partners could enjoy semi-retirement.Joel was very active in the community, serving as a member of the Midland Jaycees, president of Northern Little League Baseball, board member of the Midland Junior Baseball Association, board member of Midland Youth Center and serving on the board of the Salvation Army of Midland. He was also a long time member of the American and Permian Basin Association of Petroleum Landmen, and was a Certified Professional Landman. He formed Joel R. Miller Energy, LP. In 2004, the partnership continues to be active in the oil and gas business with his two sons. Joel was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was very active in both his childrens and grandchildrens lives, attending as many sporting and school events as possible. He will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Nancy Miller Wynn of Odessa. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley B. Miller; his son and daughter-in-law Brian K. and Laine Miller of Midland and their children, Kaitlin and Braden; and his son and daughter-in-law Steven K. and Stephanie Miller of Dallas and their children, Emily and Davis.A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on July 8, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church of Midland.
