Joan Cox of Midland, Texas age 85, left us to go and be with her heavenly father, family and friends on Monday, the 22nd day of February, 2021 after a sudden illness. Joan was born on December 6, 1936 in the town of Spur, Dickens County, Texas to W.O. and Mamie Goodwin Finley. After graduating high school Joan married Bobby Joe Cox in 1953 in Ft. Worth and they were man and wife for over 67 years.
Joan was a life long student always seeking to learn new things. While a wife and mother of three children, she continued her education attending New Mexico Jr. College in Hobbs, New Mexico, the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and finally the University of Texas at the Permian Basin earning a Bachelor of Arts in Literature with a teaching certificate. She taught for many years at the Junior High School in Monahans, Texas with dedication and enthusiasm. Joan left the teaching field to try her hand at business joining the Mary Kay cosmetics organization. Once associated, she worked her way from the bottom to become a Director in the organization. As grand-children came along Joan retired from the business world to have more time to see the little ones. It was during this time that she found one of the great passions of her life, the study of genealogy. She became a learned genealogist and advisor. Her greatest satisfaction was the authorship and publication of a book about the genealogy and development of Free Hill, Tennessee.
Joan loved sewing, crocheting and quilting for family and friends. She loved to collect antiques and study history, particularly the founding fathers. She worked as a partner with her husband in their oil field business until the end. She had a tireless spirit.
Faith in God was a major priority to Joan all of her life. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church working in the home mission field and supporting many projects to help others and further the gospel of Christ. She taught Sunday school for many years and believed solidly in the power of prayer.
Joan is survived by her devoted husband Bobby Joe Cox, her children Bliss McCall and husband J.O., Blake and his wife, Donna and April Howard and her husband Les; her grandchildren Clare Newton, Byron Reynolds, Chase Cox, Spencer Cox, Tim Howard and Katelyn Howard and seven great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her parents, two sisters and brothers and by her grandson, Tristan.
Honorary Pall Bearers will be Chase Cox, Spencer Cox, Tristan Cox, Byron Reynolds and Tim Howard.
A private graveside service will be held at Resthaven Cemetery, Midland, Texas.
Her memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel, 3800 N. Big Spring, in Midland.
