There will be a private family graveside service at 11 a.m. followed by a public memorial service and celebration of life Thursday, October 16, 2003, at 2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church, in Midland with Dr. Gary Dyer, pastor, officiating..The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Nalley-Pickle and Welch Funeral Home, 3800 N. Big Spring St. in Midland.She was born September 10, 1928, in San Antonio, Texas, the eldest child of four, to Charles Robert and Lillie Mae Miller Blank, granddaughter of Henry A. and Lydia Enk Miller and Phillip Christian and Amelia Blank, all of whom preceded her in death.She graduated valedictorian of Sam Houston High School, San Antonio, in 1945, and attended Trinity University on full scholarship, completing her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts in 1949. While at Trinity she traveled the state with the Trinity Trio singing for groups and on the radio.After moving to Midland in 1949, she met David Snow Googins, Jr. They married in San Antonio July 29, 1950, and made their home in Midland where they reared their three children: Celia Ellen Googins Hewett, David Snow Googins, III, and Shelley Jean Googins Sharp. Mr. Googins preceded his wife in death on June 26, 1987, at the age of 61. She did not remarry.Mrs. Googins was a born-again Christian and faithful member of First Baptist Church for many years. She participated in Precepts Bible Study classes and served her Lord by ministering to prisoners through teaching Bible studies by correspondence. Her voice and musical talent graced many a wedding, concert, and funeral over the years.A true music educator, Mrs. Googins taught music in the Midland public schools for 31 years at Henderson, Pease, Bonham, and Crockett elementary schools. She also taught private piano lessons and arranged musical programs for her piano and music students every year. She retired from teaching in May 1988 but remained faithfully close to a group of teachers with whom she had worked.Mrs. Googins was an avid reader and crossword puzzle wizard. She was gifted in many skills, including crochet, needlepoint, sewing, and gardening?but her quilting expertise dwarfed all her other gifts. A member of the Midland Quilters Guild, she produced quilts of geometric perfection and beautiful design and color, gracing her family members and friends with many masterpieces of love over the years. She loved her friends, her family, and her Lord.She is survived by her children and their spouses: Celia Ellen and Ray Hewett of Lubbock; Judy C. and David S. Googins, III, of Midland; and Shelley Jean and Alan Sharp of Victoria, Texas. Her surviving siblings and their spouses are Charles R. "Bubba" and Peggy June Blank of San Antonio, Paul and Dorothea Blank Hall of New Braunfels, and Dana and Henry P. "Nickie" Blank of San Antonio. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren ? Brian and Phillip Sharp of Houston, Nikki Sharp of College Station, Nathan Hewett of Lubbock, Michael Hewett of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Katherine Googins of Midland, as well as two step-grandchildren ? Thomas Tucker of Austin, and Jennifer Tucker of Midland. Additional survivors include 9 nieces and nephews.The family suggests memorials be made to First Baptist Church, 2104 W. Louisiana, Midland, TX 79701. Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory in Midland.,
