Gloria Jean Roberts(09/13/1930-11/25/2016)Gloria Jean (Bubbie) Roberts returned to her heavenly home, on November 25, 2016, after a short battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice of Midland. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 28, 2016 from 6:00PM-8:00PM at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Midland. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 11:00AM at Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland.Jean was born in a home near Merkel, TX on Sept 13, 1930. Her parents were Thomas J. and Ruth Harris.As a small child, she and her family moved to Phoenix, AZ. At age 12, she was orphaned when both her parents were murdered, in their home, in Phoenix. Jean and her sister, Patsy, then moved back to Texas to live with relatives.Jean attended school in Coahoma, TX, where she graduated in 1948. She married Troy Roberts in 1948, and was married 55 years at the time of Troy’s death. Their one child, Ginger Louanne Roberts, was born in 1952.Jean, Troy, and Ginger moved to Midland TX in 1960, when Troy took over as owner/manager of Roberts Auto Supply.Jean was a charter member of Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland, where she taught children’s bible classes for many years. She designed and organized the teacher’s workroom at GCRCC and taught workshops for other bible class teachers in area churches and the Abilene Christian Lectureships.Jean and Troy were also charter members of the West Texas Chapter of The Antique Automobile Club of America, where she was instrumental in starting the annual Grand ‘Ole Tour. Jean was a judge and participant in many of its vintage clothes contests.Jean was especially talented at craftwork. She was always busy with sewing clothes, knitting, crochet, and her favorite… quilting. Jean started the Midland Quilters Guild in 1979, after finding no organized quilting group in Midland to support her new hobby. For several years she taught classes on quilting technique at a local fabric shop. She also taught for 10 years at Midland College. Jean later went on to be elected Secretary of the International Quilters Guild.Jean is survived by one sister, Patsy Self of Big Spring, TX, her daughter Ginger Hart of Midland, two granddaughters Lacey Hart and her husband, Trey Shelton of Odessa, TX and Meredith Hart of Midland, TX, two grandsons Andrew Ashburn of Odessa and Kaden Mackey of Midland. She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas J. and Ruth Harris, her husband Troy W. Roberts, and one granddaughter Haley Kemp.The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of MMH oncology, HealthSouth hospital, and Hospice of Midland for their tender care during Jean’s illness.
