On Thursday, October 26, 2023, Jane LaRue Hicks of Midland, Texas, passed away peacefully after several months of illness.
She was born to Lawrence Schyler and Charlsie Louise Robinson in Big Spring, Texas, on February 11, 1936. She attended Big Spring High School where she entered the vocational training program. That program introduced her to what became her lifelong love of floral design and shop management. She eventually purchased Estah’s Flowers in Big Spring, naming it Jane’s Flowers, and transforming it into one of the top florist shops in the area.
Jane married the love of her life, Harold Eugene Hicks, on September 30, 1955, and they soon began their family. She continued working part-time while raising their four children. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, and painting with oils. Harold’s career kept them in Big Spring until they moved to Kermit, retiring in Midland in 1999 to be near family. They enjoyed 70 wonderful years together until Harold’s death on November 8, 2022. She was just beginning to discover who she was on her own for the first time at age 87.
Jane accepted Jesus as her Savior at an early age and served Him at every opportunity. She was a faithful member of College Baptist Church in Big Spring and First Baptist Church in Kermit. In Midland, she assisted Harold as director of the Samuel Department and participated as a mentor in the prison ministry at First Baptist Church. She had a sweet, quiet, deep faith in Jesus her Lord that was evident to all around her.
Jane is survived by three children, daughter Cathy Scott with her husband Tom, son Ben Hicks with his wife Debbie, and daughter Helen Ross with her husband David. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Matthew Hicks, Mallory Rogers, and Ally Neal, their families, and four nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and sister, Jean Hart, and son Michael Hicks. Her family wants to also mention Remi Ibrahim of Home Care Plus and Caitlin Bishop, RN for Gentiva Hospice, both of whom Jane came to love like family during their tireless care for her.
Jane’s family will be receiving friends and members of the community at a visitation and brief memorial on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Nalley Pickle & Welch Funeral Home at 3800 N. Big Spring Street, Midland.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
