James ‘Derb’ Weeks of Cleburne, TX passed away Monday May 23rd at the age of 86. A visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Saturday May 28, 2022 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Services will be held at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel, Sunday, May 29, 2022 at 10:00am. Followed by graveside services at Serenity Memorial Gardens located at 6800 SH-349 in Midland, TX.
Derb leaves behind his wife of 47 years, June Weeks and his seven children. Rhonda Phife of New Orleans, Vicki Bomar of Alamosa, Brenda Mclelland of Liverpool , Greg Weeks of Midland, Diane Derington of Midland, Ty Harbison of Floresville, and Miranda Scott of Cleburne. Thirteen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Derb was born in Lamesa, TX on October 16, 1935 to Leroy Weeks and Maudine Porter. He had two sisters Rena Hogue and Gladys Womack of Lamesa, brother Preston Weeks of Bay City, and Jody Weeks of San Angelo. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, two sisters, brother Kirby, and his beloved “Bud” his brother Preston. He grew up on a West Texas farm where he and his brothers were known to raise a little cane!
Derb enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 and served in the Korean War until 1957. His marriage to June Weeks in May of 1974 bonded this large family together and made a beautiful life of 46 years in Midland, TX. There they raised their seven kids, watched grandchildren be born and grow up, and later their great-grandchildren. Many days were spent with family gathered at their house on Pasadena celebrating birthdays and holidays. Their home filled with laughter and love.
Derb was as avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He worked up until 85 when he finally decided to retire in October of last year. He worked 35 years for Texaco and took pride in his work of surveying and building gardens at Resthaven and Serenity Memorial and then staying on as contract to open and close memorial sites for them.
Derb was the foundation of his family and a loved and admired friend to many. He lived his life with valor and kindness. To say he will be missed does no justice to the greatness of this man. He lived large and loved with all his heart. He was and remains a Hero in the hearts of these who loved him.
Rest in peace Derb, knowing you made all of our lives richer having known you.
Pallbearers will be John Mclelland, Kevin Derington, Mark Scott, Drew Harbison, Branden Weeks, and Dillon Bomar. Honorary Pallbearers will be Riley Harbison, Austin Mclelland, Justin Evans and Deven Bomar.
