James Lloyd McGill, known as J. L., was called home on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his family and loving caregivers. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Midland. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2015 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church with Reverend Jan Reed, officiating. An interment military service will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.J. L. was born on September 27, 1925 to Lloyd and Neva Beckner McGill in Weatherford, TX. He graduated from Weatherford High School in 1943, enlisted in the Air Corps soon after, being placed on the reserve list. He was then called up in December and trained at Las Vegas, NV, where he received his gunner’s wings in June 1944. He spent some time on the Lincoln, Nebraska field before being assigned overseas duty. He was in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a gunner on a B-17 bomber and completed numerous missions over enemy territory from his base in England. Before being discharged in December 1945, he received three bronze stars victory medals as well as others. He then attended Texas A & M University, receiving a double degree in Petroleum Engineering and Geological Engineering in June, 1950. Before graduating from TAMU, J. L. again served his country, attending Officer’s School in Lawton, OK and in the Korean War from 1951-1953. He concluded his service ranked as a 1st Lieutenant. Upon discharge, he completed his higher education.J. L. married June Marie Foster on November 3, 1951. Affectionately known as Junebug, they enjoyed square dancing in early marriage, where J. L. showed his talents on the dance floor as well as being a square dance caller. Later in life, they also enjoyed learning and playing golf together. They have been members of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Midland since 1976, where they loved attending the Keystone Class and J. L. was actively involved in being an usher for years.J. L. worked for Gulf Oil for 25 years. He took an early retirement in 1976 and moved to Midland and went to work for H. L. “Sonny” Brown. After Brown he worked for ATAPCO and various consulting jobs before working for his son-in-law, Terry Repman, at A-Terry’s Plumbing Heating and Air Conditioning.Survivors include his son, Jim McGill and wife, Debbie of Odessa; and daughter, Karen Hood and husband, Nick of Midland; son-in-law, Ray Stephens of Midland; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his wife, June Marie McGill; daughter Elizabeth Stephens, and his parents.A special thanks to the many caregivers who lovingly cared for him: Jan Otho, Maria Luna, Maria Vela, Mary Howell, Irma Valenzuela, Manuela Sigala, Josie Martinez, Cindy Talamantes and Eilda Alvarado are but a few. The family will be eternally grateful for your love and care.Pallbearers will be his grandsons Danny Hood, Matt Hood, Nathan Hood, Zach McGill, Brannon Therwhanger, Caleb Repman and Terry Repman. They all will be wearing maroon ties to honor their grandfather.
