James Earl Grifford, age 71, of Big Spring passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023. The family will receive friends from 5:30pm to 8pm Monday, February 27, 2023 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral Service is 10am, Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
He was born in Big Spring to Earl Joseph Grifford and Mallie Pauline Coats, on November 1, 1951. He married Janice Sue Honey on August 25, 1979. Growing up, James traveled all over with his family due to the military. He later joined the Army in 1970 and served in the Vietnam War. During his time in the military, he attached to the 1st Cavalry Unit as a LARP/ Ranger, then continued his career as a Tank Commander and Explosive Expert. After the serving in the Army, he went on to work at the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Big Spring up until he retired in 1999. James enjoyed war gaming and made many good friends. He had a unique sense of humor and was always there to protect the ones he loved.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Janice Grifford; daughter Jennifer Shaw; and granddaughters, Katelynn and Addison Shaw.
He was preceded in death by his parents, several uncles, and first wife Kay Clayton Grifford and newborn son.
The family suggests memorials to the Lubbock Children’s Home or Coahoma Church of Christ.
