James (Jim) Alan Stevens Sr. 86, of Midland, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel in Midland at 3:00pm. James was born July 19, 1927 in The Bronx, New York, along with his brother Marvin, to Harry and Agnes Stevens. James joined the U.S. Navy and served from June 1945-August 1946. He then served a second term of duty with the U.S. Army from September 1950-February 1952. He completed his Military service in the Texas State Guard, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel, Military Police Corps, in 1973. James received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University in 1950. After graduating from SMU he started his insurance business in Midland, TX where he ran the business for more than 25 years. After retiring from insurance, he decided to pursue a third career in law enforcement. He worked for Midland County as a Sheriff's Deputy and Bailiff until his final retirement in 1994. In 1974 he joined Mensa, where he was a member for 40 years of which he spent a majority of those years serving on the board of directors. He was a gracious host having may Mensa parties at his home. Through Mensa he met many of his life-long friends. He loved to travel, taking many trips all over the world. He especially enjoyed trips to Ruidoso, Las Vegas, and England with his dear friends Dereck and Roma Boardman. James was part of \The Coffee Group\ who met five days a week for decades at Greens Cafe. James is survived by his daughter Patricia Comly of Glenn Mills, PA; daughter-in-law Sidney L. Stevens of Midland, TX; grandsons, Henry Alan Stevens and wife Haley of The Woodlands, TX and James Lennox Stevens and wife Casey of Wolfforth, TX; and great grandchildren Grace, Derrick, Payton and Carson. He is preceded in death by his brother Marvin Stevens and his son James Alan Stevens Jr. Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
