Jacqueline “Jackie” Marie (Pfost) Gates, 86, died May 20, 2014. Jackie was born October 14, 1927, in Cedar City, Utah, and was adopted and raised by Rhee and Marjorie Pfost in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Patricia Keyser, husband William “Bill” Gates, and son Ralph Gates. Jackie worked as a switchboard operator in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In April 1947, Jackie happened to meet Bill as he traveled across the country from Florida to attend school in California. Bill stopped in Colorado Springs to see his friend Edgar Richardson, whose then-girlfriend and future wife was a friend of Jackie’s. After one date, Bill inquired of Jackie, \If I ask you, will you marry me?\ Jackie and Bill were married in Hawthorne, California, on June 11, 1947. He never did pop the question. Jackie was a Cub Scout den mother. She also volunteered at Kaiser Medical Center in Harbor City, California. Jackie was a quilting enthusiast, buying fabric in every craft shop she entered. She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Fink of Midland; a grandson, Stephen Gates of Midland; extended family members, Louis and Lynn Gates, Brandt Harding, and numerous nieces and nephews; and close friends, Edgar and Frances Richardson of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The family would like to give special thanks to members of the Terry Rhoads family who have treated Jackie as part of their family since Jackie and Bill became their neighbors 22 years ago, Razvan and Oana Ghermanschi who entered Jackie’s life in 2013 and immediately became like family, the Vernon Stokes family, the Ronnie Scott family, David Johnson, and the Ezekiel Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Midland. The family wishes to acknowledge the care given by Dr. Robert Vogel and numerous people at Midland Memorial Hospital. The family is at peace knowing that Jackie is with family and friends who have passed before her.
