Services for Jack Gaylord Goodwin will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, June 24, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Midland. Jack died the morning of June 21, 2016 at the age of 85 at his home. He was born November 11, 1930 in Nashville, TN to Walter G. and Ethel W. Goodwin and was raised in Florida. Jack graduated High School in Lake City, FL in 1948. He attended the University of the South in Sewanee, TN before transferring to Texas Christian University where, in 1953, he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology. Jack completed U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during the Korean War.In 1956 Jack married Marvel Foy of Jacksonville, FL. He worked as a petroleum geologist with several oil companies while moving between Jacksonville, MS, Tyler, TX, Trinidad, West Indies, Houston, TX, Midland, TX and Dallas, TX. Their second and final move to Midland, TX was in 1989 where they have since resided. He and Marvel were longtime members of Grace Presbyterian Church where he served terms as an Elder before transferring to First United Methodist Church of Midland and could be found ushering the Traditional service.Jack was an Eagle Scout and a brother of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. He was a Certified Petroleum Geologist and member of professional organizations including the American Institute of Professional Geologists, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists, West Texas Geological Society and Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists.Jack’s favorite hobby was golf, learning the game from his father, and playing for over 50 years since his senior year of high school. Jack had stated that he did not want his funeral held on a Saturday because, “All my friends will be on the golf course”. Other interests included game bird hunting and visiting favorite Florida beaches.Jack is survived by Marvel, his wife of 59 years; daughter Jan King of Austin, TX where she and Bryan King raised son Geoffrey; Wendy Roberson of Midland, TX and husband Robert with children Kayla Gass (husband Tate) of O’Donnell, TX and Kristin Roberson of Midland, TX; and cousin Diana Douglas and family of Lake City, FL.He was preceded in death by his parents and cousin, Colvin Carter.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Midland, 911 West Texas, Midland, TX 79701 or a charity of your choice.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
