J. O. Chapman, 90, of Big Spring, died Monday, February 10, 2014 in a local hospital. A private memorial service for the family will be at a later date.He was born October 20, 1923 in Knott, Howard County, Texas and married Helen Marcell Weaver April 10, 1943. Sonny graduated valedictorian from his high school class, then briefly attended Texas Technological College where he studied classes in animal sciences. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed at Big Spring Bombardeer School for the duration of his service. He served an additional six months after the war ended in Rantoul, Illinois. He began a life time career at Bollinger's Meat Market and eventually owned and operated his own business, Chapman's Meat Market.The thing he enjoyed most in life was farming, he loved the farm people and farm life and thought that was the only way to live.Survivors include his wife, Helen Marcell Weaver Chapman of Big Spring; one daughter and son-in-law, Robbie and Jim Walker of Levelland; one son and daughter-in-law, Olan Marcellous and Marie Chapman; five grandchildren, Michelle Chapman and husband, Jon Pruitt of Fairfield, Connecticut, David Cory Walker and wife, Jennifer of Boulder, Colorado, Jennifer Paige Hurst and husband, Jerred of Lubbock, Laurie Jackson Allen and husband, Trenton of Aspen, Colorado and Amanda Walling of Basalt, Colorado; four great-grandchildren, Hallie Anne and Luke Haynes Pruitt of Fairfield, Connecticut, Noah James and Ella Grace Hurst of Lubbock; and a large extended family.He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvie Franklin and Nona Myrtle Bronaugh Chapman; two brothers, Ardis and Maurice Chapman; and two sisters, Maureen Ringener and Evelyn Turner.Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
