J.N. "Pete" Woody, Jr., 79, a third generation resident of Martin County and fifth-generation Texan, passed away on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, in a Midland hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, February 11, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church of Stanton with Rev. Daniel Armstrong, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton.The family will receive friends from 6 PM to 7 PM, Saturday, February 9 at the funeral home.He was born on September 18, 1928, in Martin County, Texas to J.N. and Inez Houston Woody. He married Marie Vandever on February 23, 1956 in Odessa, Texas. Pete was a graduate of Stanton High School and attended Texas Tech University. He served in the United States Army in Alaska during the Korean War. He spent his career working in the family's farming and ranching operation in Martin County with his brother, Houston and his son, Jim. Pete's community activities included serving as a member of the Stanton ISD School Board for a number of years, and an active supporter of local athletics. Pete was also active in outdoor competitive pistol shooting, and won numerous championships including setting individual and team national records. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Stanton, a 32nd degree Master Mason and Past Master of Masonic Lodge #951 A.F. & A.M. in Stanton.Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marie Woody of Stanton; one son, Jim Woody and wife, Julie of Stanton; two daughters, Carolyn Woody Graham of Springfield, Virginia and Linda Woody Cobb and husband, Stephen of Houston; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Woody and Inez Houston Woody, two brothers, Houston Woody and Johncal Woody.
