J. C. \Jake\ Newell, 79, of Garden City, died Saturday, June 14, 2014 in a Midland hospital. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at the Garden City Cemetery with Rev. Herb McPherson and Danny Whitehead officiating. He was born August 11, 1934 in Greenville, Texas and married Doralee Schafer May 22, 1953 in Garden City, Texas. She preceded him in death May 24, 2011. He came to Garden City in 1950 and had worked as a field operator for Phillips Oil Company for 40 years. He spent his retirement years selflessly helping others. Most recently, being available to help with his great grandchildren that lived close by. Family and friends were blessed to have been part of a life well lived as a role model of a true friend, committed husband and father and loving grandfather. J. C. (Jake), Daddy, Papa demonstrated unconditional love to everyone he knew and was always looking for a way to making someone else’s life happier and easier. May 22, 2014 marked 61 years of marriage with Doralee Newell and he was quick to say, “Today I have been married 61 years.” Survivors include one son, Richard Guy Newell and wife, Tammy of Midland; one daughter, Sheryl Lynn Smith and husband, Tim of Glasscock County; two brothers, Donald Paul Newell of Plano and Louis M. Newell of Des Moines, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, Stacy and husband Louis French, Jenny and husband Jimmy Fox, Ashlee Smith, Lyndsey and husband, Dustin Baker, Jamie and husband Mario Morales, Aaren and wife Casey Smith, Ashley Newell and 8 great grandchildren, Layne and Kaylee French, Karly, Landry, Cade and Cooper Baker, and Allie and Samantha Morales. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe Taft Newell and Mary Matilda Frye Newell; and three brothers, Roscoe Newell, Jr., Wesley Morris Newell and Truitt King Newell. Honorary pallbearers will be Dustin Baker, Louis French, Jimmy Fox, Mario Morales, Aaren Smith, Justin Gard, Jay Gard and Kolten Crawford.
