Ina Corene Manning long time resident of Stanton, TX passed away on August 13, 2008 at Midland Memorial Hospice Unit. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM ,Saturday, August 16, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Daniel Armstrong , pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, August 15 from 7 PM to 8 PM at Gilbreath Funeral Home. She was born on May 12, 1921 in Martin County. Corene met her future husband, James Manning, Jr. while working at the Soil Conservation Office in Stanton. Corene married James Manning, Jr. on November 20, 1942. James was a stockman and farmer; they were married for 21 years. Corene went to Draughn's Business School in Lubbock, TX. She was the tax assessor/collector and business manager for the Stanton ISD for 29 years. She was one of the first certified tax collectors (CTA) in the state of Texas. She often lobbied for the tax assessors for schools in Austin and was often consulted by state officials. She was a member of The United Methodist Church of Stanton all of her life. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the Official Board, and was a member of The United Methodist Women. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and served as president numerous times. She was a charter member of the Stanton Hospital Auxiliary and served as president several years. She worked at the Auxiliary Thrift Shop along with her sister Flora Dee for more than twenty years. Any time money was counted in Stanton, whether ballgames, senior citizens, church or auxiliary functions, Corene was the person in charge! Corene was always active. She was a consummate card and domino player. Friends and family would gather at her house for Skip-Bo or a game of 42 most Friday nights. Although she lived alone for more than 45 years; her front door was always open and a steady stream of friends and family were in and out daily. She was a wonderful friend to many, often taking others to doctor's appointments and church when they could no longer go along. This was reciprocated by others as she grew older. She was a devoted mother to three daughters. She is survived by them: Carolyn Lane and husband Abe and grandchildren, Stephanie Carson and great grand children Kayla and Brock Carson, Brian Lane and wife Lisa and 3 great grandchildren: Taylor, Erin and Colton and Brad Lane and wife Deanna. Linda Tole and husband Jerry two sons: Michael and wife, Melissa and daughter Evelyn and Ryan Tole. Sheila Eck and husband Michael and son Brian Eck. She is also survived by brothers Wayne Cook and wife JoAnn and Fred Cook & wife Gene, sisters-in-laws Pauline Cook McDonald, wife of Johnny and Alta Cook, wife of Eddie and numerous nieces and nephews. Corene is preceded in death by her parents Joe and Eva Cook, brothers, Johnny Cook, Jack Cook and Eddie Cook, sisters Eva Mae Cook and Flora Dee Wilson and husband James S. Manning, Jr. Pallbears are grandsons: Brian Lane, Brad Lane, Michael Tole , Ryan Tole, Brian Eck and great grandsons: Brock Carson and Colton Lane. Honorary pall bears are her nephews: Jimmy Cook, Randy Cook, Bob Wilson, Bill Wilson, Lee Cook, Kyle Cook, Kenneth Cook, Mark Cook, Mike Cook, Steve Cook and Ronnie Cook. The family would like to thank Hospice Midland nursing staff, Darla Teague her case supervisor and Dr. Gregory Bartha for their loving and compassionate care. Her care givers: Rosie McCuin, Rosie Young, Mary Mendez, Linda Payne, and Kathy Poole who were devoted to her. They were instrumental in allowing her to live her last days contentedly in her own home. We thank her many friends and family who allowed her to live independently for the last years of her life. Especially, Bobby and Doris Holland who picked up her mail daily, Rosie McCuin who took her food and checked on her daily and took her to doctor's appointments, Chuck and Mona Elmore who took her to church on Sundays. Sister-in-law Alta Cook who visited her on Sunday and took her to look at her "oil wells," Wayne and JoAnn Cook who were always available in emergencies and when she needed them. And to all of her Senior Citizen, Sunday School Class, Beta Sigma Phi sisters and card playing buddies and her many nieces and nephews who were always there when she needed them. The family suggests memorials be made to the Stanton Senior Citizens Building Fund, P.O. Box 1233, Stanton, Texas 79782 or to Hospice of Midland, P.O.
