Howard Waid Armstrong, age 91, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023. The family will receive friends from 6pm-8pm, Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Clayton Smith, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
Howard was born in Soash, Texas, Howard County, May 15, 1932 to W.F. Armstrong and Sudie Armstrong. He married the love of his life Pearl Armstrong July 4, 1952 in Lubbock, Texas. Howard went to Soash School until its closing and then continued his schooling in Ackerly, Texas for the remainder of his school years. After graduation, he became a farmer in Ackerly.
Howard entered the US Army in December 1952, after only being married for 5 months. He served 2 years in the Korean War and returned home. Howard worked for Pollard Chevrolet in Big Spring, Texas for many years before farming full time. He loved farming and livestock and did both very well. He retired from farming in 2001.
He helped his children in showing cattle for many years and watched them accomplish their dreams until Diann’s last show in 1978. Howard was a lifetime member of TCCA (Texas Club Calf Association) and was a founding member. He was elected Honorary State Future Farmer of America. Howard was a Howard County Fair Board member until his retirement. He was a ring man for TCCA Livestock Shows all around the state of Texas until his granddaughter, Frances Clark, started showing steers. He spent many hours working on her steers and guiding her through her experience in the show arena.
He is survived by his son Dennis Armstrong of O’Donnell, daughter Diann Armstrong of Ackerly; grandchildren: LaDonna (Danny) Wilson of Coahoma, Frances Clark of Big Spring, Sarah Crow of Knoxville, Tennessee, Christopher Clark of Plainview; great grandchildren: Madison Smith, Zachery Kinard, Haylee Henderson, Greg Henderson, Taylor Timberlake, Woody Crow, Nicole Clark and one great great grandchild Zaleigha Lewis and various nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents W.F. Armstrong and Sudie Armstrong, his beloved wife Pearl Armstrong, as well as brothers D.K. Armstrong, Byrom Armstrong and one sister Delma Graham.
Pallbearers will be Stan Smith, Vance Smith, Lonnie Taylor, Brandon Idan, Steve Blagrave and Joe Zant.
