Herbert James “Herb” Wacker, 78, of Midland, Texas, entered the presence of his Lord on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. A celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 26, 2026, at Christ Church Anglican in Midland.
Herb is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gail Louise Wacker; his sister, Elizabeth McConnell; his brother, Douglas Wacker; his children, Jason Wacker (Leigh-Anne) and Amanda Kessler (Matthew); and his cherished grandchildren, Haley Daniels (Nathan), Jared Wacker, Benjamin (Reagan), Susanna, and Barrett Kessler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Joseph and Charlotte Anne Wacker.
Born in Orange, New Jersey, on August 4, 1948, Herb graduated from Memorial High School in Houston before earning a bachelor’s degree in geology from Texas Christian University and a master’s degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. He enjoyed a distinguished career as a petroleum geologist with Amoco, Altura, Oxy, and later CrownQuest, where his expertise and integrity earned the respect of colleagues throughout the industry.
While Herb enjoyed a successful career, his greatest calling was as a husband, father, grandfather, friend, and follower of Christ. He and Gail built a life centered on faith, family, and service. Together they led church small groups, mentored young people, served on church leadership, and faithfully invested in the lives of others. Their compassion extended around the world through mission partnerships in Uganda, where they faithfully supported Fred, Prossy, and their families for many years.
To everyone who knew Herb, he was the happiest and most joyful man they had ever met. His warm smile, infectious laugh, and genuine interest in others made everyone feel welcome. He found great happiness in saltwater fishing, afternoons at Inks Lake, and especially in teaching his grandchildren to fish, creating memories they will treasure forever. His unwavering faith, generous heart, and joyful spirit were evident in every aspect of his life.
The family is deeply grateful to the caregivers at Legacy Ranch Memory Care and Hospice of Midland for the loving care they provided. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Christ Church Midland. Herb leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, kindness, and joy that will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences may be made at www.npwelch.com.
