Helen D. Green, 89, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, April 20, 2003, in a local hospital. Vigil servics will be at 7:00 PM Monday, April 21, 2003 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. James Plagens, officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park. She was born Helen Frances Duley January 4, 1914, in Bonham, Texas, to Frank James Duley and Mary Agnes Ward Duley. She graduated valedictorian from St. Edward's Academy in Dallas. She moved with her family to Big Spring in 1932. Helen played the organ at St. Thomas Catholic Church her first Sunday in Big Spring at the age of 18 and continued when the membership built Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church until 2001. She even played some there this last year. She worked at the Big Spring Chamber of Commerce and at Big Spring High School. In 1933 she went to work at Cosden. She was the first woman secretary at the Big Spring Refinery. She eventually became secretary to Cosden Presidents R. L. Tollett and Paul D. Meek. She was assistant secretary of Cosden Petroleum Corporation and was assistant secretary of Cosden Oil and Chemical Company, Coltex Refining Co., River Pipe Line Co., and Trust Pipe Line Co. She was a former Secretary of the Year and was written up in many oil and gas publications. She retired from Cosden in January 1977 when she developed serious vision problems. She was a charter member of Big Spring's Desk and Derrick Club and Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a member of Cosden's 25 year Club and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Helen was an honorary member of East Fourth Street Baptist Church's Mighty Oaks. She was the piano player in the Hot Potato Kitchen Band, and recently had volunteered playing the piano at the Veterans Administration Retirement Home. She had formerly served on the YMCA and USO Boards. She had been sweetheart of the Lions and ABC Clubs since she played the piano for their early meetings. She married Leslie E. Green on May 9, 1949 in Tyler, Texas. He preceded her in death on August 19, 1978. Helen is survived by two daughters, Paula Green of Houston and Lynn Goddard and husband, Gaylan, of Yuma, Arizona; three granddaughters, Angela Goddard of Irving, Corrie Goddard of Dallas and Meagan Goddard of College Station; and a niece, Katherine Hood of Estes Park, Colorado.
