Harriet Irene McGinnis

Harriet Irene McGinnis, 101, of Big Spring, died on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at her daughter's home in Big Spring. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at the College Baptist Church with Rev. Ken McMeans, pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Capitan Cemetery in Capitan, New Mexico. She was born on March 25, 1908, in Madison, Nebraska and grew up on a ranch at Spencer, Nebraska. She graduated from high school at Spencer and attended the University of Nebraska. She taught school for six years in Nebraska and was a medical lab technician for two and one-half years. She married Fay McGinnis on January 14, 1937 in Colombus, Nebraska. They moved to Roswell, New Mexico in 1948, where Harriet worked for A.S. Blauw, M.D., Pathologist as his histologist at the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center for eighteen years. She and her husband also operated a hardware store in Hagerman, until they sold it and moved to Lincoln, New Mexico in 1968. Harriet moved to Big Spring in 1987. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and had taught adult Sunday School. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Duffy Vassar of Big Spring and Jean and Albert Hill of Roswell, New Mexico; one grandson and wife, Mark and Veronda Vassar of Big Spring; one granddaughter and husband, Melinda and David McReynolds of Midland; six great grandchildren, Ryan, Kristine and Heather Vassar and Kambri, Kylee and Jordan McReynolds and a host of friends and admirers. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 15, 1976; her father and mother and one granddaughter Mindy Vassar on June 19, 1988.
