Gladys was born on December 26, 1948 in Littlefield, TX to Alexander and Bessie Strambler. She was a beautiful soul whose smile lit up a room and whose personality drew you in. She had many friends and was a well-loved member in the community of Big Spring. Her spiritual life was anchored at Baker’s Chapel AME Church, under the direction of Pastor Sonia Scott, where she served as financial secretary. She was also a Life Time member of the North Texas Women’s Missionary Society. Gladys was a visible member of the community. She was a member of the Rotary Club. She was a member of the Salvation Army board. She served on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Big Spring and Howard. She was a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer serving the children in West Texas.
She was raised in Midland, TX where she met and married her husband, Dickie Thompson. She eventually moved to Big Spring where they raised their three kids. While living in Big Spring, she pursued a career in banking. Her infectious smile warmed the hearts of every person who had the pleasure of interacting with her. After 38 years of service at Wells Fargo, where she provided financial options and guidance she retired in August of 2013. In her retirement she loved to travel the world aboard cruise ships with friends and family.
Gladys is survived by her three kids: Eric Thompson (Jessica), Katrina Thompson Butler and Richard Thompson. Two brothers and two sisters: Alexander Strambler (Jackie) and Marcus Strambler; Gracie White (Tommy) and Hattie Tennon. Four Grandkids (Katherine, Masseo, Matthew and Peyton) and two great-grandchildren (Zidane and Malaysia).
Gladys is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Alexander and Bessie Strambler, along with seven brothers: Willie Lee, Rev. Farris Lee, Bobby Ray, Charles Ray, Rev. Allen B., Jerry Lee, and Teddy Joe as well as one sister Margie Goodley.
Eric, Katrina and Richard would like to express their gratitude to the nurses and doctors at Midland Memorial Hospital, Gricelda Camacho, Adelia Barker, Meals on Wheels of Big Spring, and of course the many family and friends who assisted in caring and looking after our mom.
