George Luis Fierro, 69, of Midland, Texas, passed away on Monday, April 14, 2025. A viewing will begin at 8:00 am to 9:00 pm on Monday, April 21, 2025, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 pm. Funeral mass will begin at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church.
George was born on June 9, 1955, in Big Spring, Texas, to Emiliano Alvarado Fierro and Maria Del Refugio Sarmiento. He graduated from Big Spring High School, attended Howard College, and later graduated from the University of Texas at Permian Basin with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. After receiving his education, George pursued a career with the YMCA at various locations, including branches beginning in Odessa, Texas, onto Culver City, California, and retiring as CEO of the Midland YMCA after several decades of service. During this time, he was a member of the Chicano Golf Association, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church growing up, and a representative of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church as a member of the Knights of Columbus. George enjoyed playing handball and golf, cruises, time on the beach, and volunteering at various church functions with his brothers of the Knights.
George cared deeply about his family, including his sons, siblings, and large extended family. He was willing to travel far and wide to spend time with them all. Without a doubt, George would say his greatest love and achievement would be his two loving sons, Chris and Andy.
George is survived by his two sons, Christopher and Andrew Fierro, brother Albert Fierro and sister Maria Trevino.
George is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Lou (Sandy) Fierro; his parents, Emiliano Alvarado Fierro and Maria Del Refugio Sarmiento; his brothers, Gabe and Felix Fierro; and his sister, Connie Johnson.
The family would like to express gratitude to the nurses and staff at Fresenius Kidney Care Permian Basin and Texas Oncology in Midland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, the YMCA of Midland, the Knights of Columbus affiliated with St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, the American Heart Association, or the American Cancer Society.
George’s smile and big heart will be genuinely missed by all family, friends, and those he encountered.
