James George Drury Weeks born March 24, 1919 in Meridian, Texas to Drury and Mary Weeks, passed away September 13, 2004, in Big Spring, where he has made his home since 1946. George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Johnnie B. Weeks; his daughter, Beth Cook of Mesquite, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, John D. and Cynthia Weeks and Donald R. and Joy Weeks all of Big Spring; three granddaughters, Tatum Weeks of Lubbock, Whitney and Kendra Weeks of Big Spring. He is also survived by two sisters, Gretna Zoe Gibbs of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Mary Jo Tope of Monument, Colorado along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, John T. Weeks.George grew up in Meridian, Texas and graduated from Meridian High School where he lettered in football. He worked for several local merchants as a bookkeeper, including a grocery store, lumberyard, and clothing stores. He then enlisted in the Army as an Administrative Assistant and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Headquarter Battery, 18th field artillery battalion in the European Theater. He served four years in active duty and three years in the reserves. After separation from active duty, he moved to Big Spring where he worked for Hemphill Wells Company for 12 years. George and his brother-in-law, Gilbert Gibbs, then opened Gibbs & Weeks Men's Store and remained in business for 31 years. After selling the clothing store he continued to work for the new owners at Gentleman's Corner for several years. Upon retirement he worked for Dunlap's Department Store, Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home and Tri-State Advertising Sales.He was a faithful member of 14th and Main Church of Christ for many years. George was a 50 year member of Staked Plains Lodge No. 598, A.F. & A.M., a member of the Suez Shrine Club, a member of Big Spring Chapter #67, Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Ambucs and various business service clubs. He served on the board of Howard College, the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Howard County Fair Board. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend.Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, September 16, 2004, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Royce Clay, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM, Wednesday at the funeral home.Memorials may be made to Howard College, Attention: Jan Foresyth, 1001 Birdwell Lane, Big Spring, Texas 79720.Arrangements under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
