Gail was born in Decatur, Texas on January 21, 1932 to Iris Ward and Walter Jennings O’Brien. Gail spent her early childhood in Oklahoma, then at the age of eight her family would move to Denton, Texas. Upon graduating from Denton High School in 1948, Gail attended Texas State College for Women, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Speech Education in 1952. Upon her college graduation, she began teaching English and Drama at Denison High School.
Gail O’Brien and Jim Storrie met as students at Denton High School. After dating a few years they married on July 30, 1953, in the Little Chapel in the Woods in Denton, Texas. Jim was in the Air Force for two and a half years during which Gail taught school in El Paso, Texas. After moving to Midland in 1958, she taught at Midland High School for a year. Retiring from teaching, Gail’s interests turned to gardening which led her to serve as an officer and active member for many years in the Midland Council of Garden Clubs.
James Brien (Jimmy) arrived in 1962, David Ward followed shortly after in 1964, and Patricia Anne (Anne) completed their family in 1969. Gail was an active stay at home wife and mother, often volunteering at school and church, serving in the PTA, driving multiple children to various lessons and practices, and toting animals for show and tell. She loved her family well in her words and actions. Gail was an accomplished Bible teacher, cook, baker, hostess, seamstress, bridge player, and friend. She was an amazing wife to Jim and an outstanding mom to Jimmy, David, and Anne.
Gail was a member of First Baptist Church Midland since 1958 where she served as the Director of Drama for over 30 years, writing and directing many of the Easter and Christmas presentations. She and Jim sang in the Worship Choir for almost 50 years. She was also the director of the Outdoor Living Nativity Scene which began in 1975. She served in that role for 40 years. Gail also served as a Sunday school Bible study teacher in the Simon department for several years. In 1989, Gail became an accredited Precept upon Precept Bible study leader and led over 30 Bible studies. Gail’s passion for teaching the Word of God brought her great hope and joy and she pursued her passion for teaching God’s Word into her early 80s. Her love for Jesus, His Church, her family, and friends were Gail’s greatest joys in life. She devoted herself unwaveringly to all. Most of all, Gail loved the Lord and it showed in her love for those around her.
