G. W. Murphy, 86, of Oak Creek, died on Friday, June 29, 2001, in a Sterling City nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 30, 2001, at the Garden City Cemetery with Rev. Alvie Stiefer, pastor of First Baptist Church of Garden City, officiating. He was born on March 14, 1915 in the Wilmeth Community in Runnels County, Texas on the G. C. Murphy farm. He married Ila Ruby Morgan on September 29, 1940 in Ballinger, Texas and she preceded him in death on November 6, 1999. Mr. Murphy had lived and farmed in the Luther Community since 1950. He retired in 1982, at which time he moved to Oak Creek Lake. He was a devoted husband and loving father and loved fishing, camping, growing roses and seeing the wildflowers. He was a Baptist. Survivors include four daughters, Mary Lee McBrayer of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Anita Calverley of Garden City, Jane Hutchings of Brownwood and Ruby Nell Jones of Marysville, California; one son, Bill Murphy of Garden City; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Matthews and Raymond Matthews and one sister, Mildred Poehls. The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.
