Freda Walker Harris beloved Mother, wife, sister, aunt, cousin and friend passed away June 6, 2008 at her home in Midland, Texas following a brief illness. She was born in Terry County, Texas, at home, during a raging flood, to Alleta Editha and Lee Overton Walker on May 10, 1928. She was raised in Meadow, Texas where she graduated high school in 1945. After attending Abilene Christian College and teaching fifth grade for a year in Rankin, Texas, she graduated Texas Tech University in 1947 and moved to Crane, Texas to teach first grade. It was there, in 1951, that she met and married B.T. Cowden. Her daughters, Candi Beth and Billi Terre, were born in 1952 and 1953. The family moved to Midland in 1960. In 1968, Freda began playing tennis with her daughters and just two years later began playing competitively with tennis partner, Bill Harris. The duo won the Texas State Championship in the 35 and Over Division in 1972, and Freda and Candi were ranked #2 in Texas in the Mother-Daughter Division in 1974. Bill and Freda were married in 1973, and went on to take Texas tennis by storm, capturing the Midland City Championship in three divisions that next year. Tennis was a passion they shared for many years. The couple was ranked first in the Husband-Wife Division in 1989.After making a home for her family, Freda Harris had an interesting and successful life as a teacher, was later employed with Allstate Insurance, and the Dallas Rupe brokerage firm, and in 1982, put her creative skills to work when she became licensed as an Interior Designer.Mrs. Harris has three sisters Alma Laverne Preston (deceased), Wanda Joyce Odle of Runaway Bay, Texas, Lee Nell Eubank of Farwell, Texas – and one brother, Darl Walker of Crosbyton, Texas.Honorary pallbearers are Randy Odle, Rex Finley, Alan Eubank, Lee Walker, Bobby Harris, and Alec Harris. The memorial service for Mrs. Freda Walker Harris will be Monday, June 9, 2008 at 11:00 am at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel in Midland, and will be presided over by Ron Schroeder.Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Midland, PO Box 2621, Midland, TX 79702.Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
