Francis William “Bill” Schammel passed away at the age of 82 on Monday, November 20, 2023, in Midland. He now rests at the right hand of the Lord.
He was born April 17, 1941 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He mostly grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. He graduated from Arizona State University. Bill and his family moved to Midland, TX in 1979 and was hired as the General Manager of the Midland Cubs Baseball Club until September 30, 1984. He was honored as the Executive of the year for the Texas League of Baseball Clubs in 1983. After the baseball ownership changed, he and his wife owned and operated Travel Time Travel Agency until 1985. He then was employed at the City of Midland as Municipal Court Administrator until his retirement in 1997.
Bill was President and active in the West-side Optimist Club. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. His other civic activities included: “Midland 101”, served on the Parks and Recreation Commission, Midland Symphony String Quartet Board, Leadership Midland 1988, Keep Midland Beautiful Board, Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee for the Permian Basin Metropolitan Planning Organization, Permian Basin Master Gardeners. He also umpired Little League and Junior League Baseball for 36 years, and he was an actor in the Midland Community Theatre. He especially was honored to be a Eucharistic Minister and Visitor for The Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity. He enjoyed watching Chicago Cubs baseball, Lee Rebel athletics, gardening, golf and traveling all over the world.
He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Francis William Sr. and Charlene B. Monson Schammel along with his wife, Elizabeth Ann Sullivan-Schammel.
His survivors include his daughter, Mary Kathleen Schammel-Collett, and husband Scott of Lubbock, TX; his sister, Mary Holz, of Los Altos, CA; and a nephew, Brian Armer of California.
Memorial services, Rite 1 Holy Eucharist and interment in the church columbarium will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity at 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 2, 2023.
Honorary pallbearers are Bill Ward, Jason Osburn, Blaine Osburn, Mike Peek, Kim Alford and Sean Perez, all of Midland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Senior Services or The Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, Midland, TX.
