Growing up in the Piney Woods of Texas she graduated from Anahuac High School and obtained her degree from Baylor University. She proceeded to obtain her nursing degree in the first nursing graduating class at Baylor.
After marrying Joe Hilliard they moved to Augusta, GA where Joe did his medical residency, and she worked as a pediatric nurse. At this juncture their son Stephen was born. Joe took posting in Galveston and Waco before they settled in Midland in 1959, and Joe worked as an internist with Dr. Greenlee. Shortly thereafter he established his own practice, and two more children entered the Hilliard household. She became a stay-at-home mom and nurtured the children wonderfully. After Joe passed, she married Richard Saxe, Jr. and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage for many years until his passing in 2011.
During her years in Midland, she was active in the First Baptist Church, Midland Racquet Club, Junior League and other endeavors. She was actively involved with all her children and made special efforts to visit them later in life when they had all established their own families in California, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. When the grandchildren would visit, she would have nonstop activities which earned her the name “The Energizer Bunny”. The grandkids would return home in order to get some rest.
After Dick passed and after some time at Manor Park she moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in October 2017 to Sunrise at Siegen.
