Evelyn Marie Landers, 89, of Houston, formerly of Big Spring, died on Saturday, April 7, 2001, in a Houston hospital. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at the First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Jeff Donnell, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. Marie was born on July 10, 1911 in Newark, Arkansas and married Martin Landers on August 19, 1936 in Ada, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on July 12, 1989 after 53 years of marriage. She received her BA Degree from East Texas Central State Teachers College in Ada, Oklahoma, a Masters Degree in Education from Baylor University, and also a Masters Degree in Religous Education from Southwestern Theological Seminary. Mrs. Landers had done graduate studies toward her Doctorate Degree at Texas Tech University. Mrs. Landers was a preacher's wife and a dedicated school teacher. She had taught elementary and high school in Oklahoma and Texas, teaching at Hugo and McAlister, Oklahoma, and then in Ft. Worth, Plainview, and Big Spring, Texas. In Big Spring she taught for fifteen years at Kentwood and Parkhill Elementary Schools. Mrs. Landers moved to Houston in 1995 to be near her son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She was a member of the Williams Trace Baptist Church in Sugarland, Texas, a former longtime member of First Baptist Church in Big Spring and had served as teacher of the Questers Sunday School Class for 30 years. She was also a member of the Texas State Teachers Association, and Kappa Delta Gamma, Honor society in Education. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. William and Maurine Landers of Houston, four grandchildren, Alicia Maurine Morford and her husband, Jonathan, of Houston, Melanie Ann Landers of Portland, Oregon, Martin Clark (Marty) Landers of Austin, and Brian Dewane Landers of Houston; and one great granddaughter, Drew Maurine Morford of Houston. The family suggest memorials be made to the Children's Ministries at the Williams Trace Baptist Church in Sugarland, Texas, or the Quester's Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, 705 W. FM 700, Big Spring, Texas 79720. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.
