E.G. Slick” Brumley, 94, of Midland, died on Tuesday,
October 28, 2003, in Odessa. Funeral services will be
held at 10:00 AM Friday, October 31, 2003 at the Alamo
Heights Baptist Church in Midland with Rev. Rodney
Williams, officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven
Memorial Park Midland.
He was born on January 13, 1909, in Many, Louisiana
and married Winnie Mae Spraberry on August 23, 1930
in Mt. Zion, Louisiana. She preceded him in death on
April 13, 2001.
He worked in the oilfield booms at Kilgore, and Snyder,
Texas in addition to many Permian Basin Fields. He also
spent six months working in the oilfields of Israel. He
and his wife, Winnie, were given an hour to prepare for
departure from Ashkelon, Israel in 1956 when fighting
broke out between israel and Egypt over the contested
Gaza Strip. “Slick” and Winnie also lived in Brazil
in 1959-1960 while he worked on some exploration
wells there. Taking a break from the oilfields, in 1952
“Slick” and his brother Ray began a water well drilling
business in Shreveport, LA, but West Texas lured him back
until he did the overseas jobs. When they returned
to the states, they lived in Atlanta, TX, where they
owned a “mom and pop” grocery and service station
for a few years. He worked at several jobs while being
semi-retired. “Slick” enjoyed several hobbies, including
piloting small engine airplanes, fishing, hunting, playing
dominos, and bowling. His passion was deer hunting in
East Texas. The highlight of his year was the two weeks
he spent with his hunting buddies on the deer lease. He
had several mounted racks of horns and trophies of these
hunts, not to mention all the venison meat he enjoyed
eating. At the age of 80, he began bowling with the
“Rock-n-Roll” Bowling League, which later became
the “Charlie Lowke Senior League”. He became quite
good at this newest hobby until poor health caused him
to have to quit. He and Winnie were faithful members of
Alamo Heights Baptist Church and dedicated Christians.
He lived an honest, moral life before his family and
friends. His word was his bond. What better legacy
could he leave? He will be missed greatly by all who
knew him and he will be welcomed in Heaven by his
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and by Winnie, his faithful
and loving wife for seventy years.
Survivors include two daughters & sons-in-law, Barbara
& Bill Luckett of Enid, Oklahoma, and Betty & Herb
