Erika Hoak, 39, of Midland, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013 at the Hospice House in Odessa after a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 4:00 pm at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Chapel with KC Blackketter officiating. She was born in Pineville, KY, on June 6, 1973, to Doyle and Sandra Swanner. Erika received her Bachelors degree from West Texas A&M University in Music Therapy. She married Brent Hoak on December 28, 1996 in San Antonio, TX. She was a substitute teacher for MISD and all of her students knew her by Mrs. Fabulous. She was a proud member of the Midland Community Symphonic Band with her husband and two sons. Volunteering at the boys schools was always on her to do list. She was named Carver Center volunteer of the year in 2012 and worked with both the Abell Jr High percussion section and the Midland Lee pit during the past marching season. Her passion was teaching music to sons, Alexander and William, and also teaching her students. After her diagnosis Erika was introduced to Arbonne and became a consultant. Erika was a beloved, wife, mother, and daughter. Her most enjoyable moments were spent surrounded by her family. She will be deeply missed.She is survived by her husband, Brent Hoak of Midland; two sons, Alexander and William Hoak of Midland; mother, Sandra Swanner of Odessa; father, Doyle Swanner of Pineville, KY; brother D.R. Swanner; mother and father-in-law, Cathy and Terry Hoak of Midland; brother-in-law, Wade Hoak of San Angelo; and sister-in-law, Jessie Hoak of Midland; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Carver Center Library, 1300 E Wall St. Midland, TX 79701. You fought so bravely and with such grace and dignity -- you were an inspiration to all of us who were privileged enough to have you in our lives. I thank God for allowing me to be your mother -- you taught me so much about life, love, giving of yourself, and so much more. You are sorely missed and I pray for Brent and the boys daily.

Although we morn our loss of you, we rejoice in your life and how you blessed us all. Your suffering has ended and once again you are whole. You touched so many lives in so many ways your legacy will live on for eternity.

We are so sorry to hear of Erica's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May God bless and comfort all her family and friends.

I played the mallots with Erika at WT. She took me under her wing my freshman year of college and the imprint of her sweet spirit has stayed with me all these years.Beautiful, precious Erika.

I can't believe I'm writing this for you... There are so few people in this world like you. It's hard to grasp the fact that you're gone. The memories are not though... They will last forever. The fun times we had as kids in high school and all the conversations we have had these past few years will always stay locked in my heart and memory.You taught me so much just talking on the phone, I can't imagine how much you have taught your family. Such fond memories of a petite blond sophomore in the William Howard Taft Band... Erika was such a sweet person in high school and I was truly blessed to read her posts of strength and life on Facebook! My love to her family! God Bless!

Brent, We are so sorry for your loss. Erika was always such a bright light in any room she entered. We first met her as my daughters roommate at Baylor and watched her become a wonderful woman, wife, mother, and friend. She will be missed by everyone she touched and she touched many. Our prayers are with you and the family.

I can only imagine how this must be for the family at a time like this, but I want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I am here for you if you ever need anything or just want to talk. I treasure our friendship and wish each and every one of you the best. My beautiful friend, you are sorely missed. Thank you for all the best memories from our days as Taft Raiders. All the percussion slumber parties at your house, the hours spent in the drum room, and all the bean and cheese tacos. Surely Heaven is a sweeter place with you in it.

Erika was one of the most amazing women I have ever had the privilege of knowing, and inspired me to always try harder in everything I do. We will miss her deeply, but know that we will see glimpses of her spirit everywhere we look. Your family is in our prayers.
