Emma Jane Prophet Matthews, 86, of Midland, Texas passed away September 1, 2015 at Midland Memorial Hospital.She was born in Dallas, Texas September 12, 1928 to Richard D. Prophet and Della Collier Prophet. As a child she lived in Dallas, Lubbock, Ft. Worth, Arlington, and Houston. She graduated from Lamar High School in Houston, TX. Jane met Robert F. (Bob) Matthews at TCU. They were married in Houston, TX on August 27, 1949. Jane was preceded in death by Bob in May 2005, as well as her parents; and her brother W.R. (Bob) Prophet.Once married, Jane and Bob moved to Midland, Texas in 1950, where Bob worked for Humble Oil Company. Jane worked for Loffland Drilling Co, and Oliver and Katyze. They had further assignments with Humble/Exxon in Midland 1950-53, Roswell, NM 1953-61, Houston, TX 1961-64, New Orleans, LA, 1964-69, Houston, TX 1969-73, Midland, TX 1973-81, and Houston, TX 1981 until Bob's retirement in 1986. They then retired to Santa Fe, NM in 1988 until Jane moved to Manor Park in Midland, TX in December 2008.Jane was an avid volunteer in the Assistance League of Roswell, NM, taught Sunday school at First Methodist Church in Roswell, NM, and at Memorial Drive Methodist Church in Houston, TX. She was a Den Mother and Den Leader Coach at Aurora Methodist Church in New Orleans, LA. Bob and Jane were also involved nationally in go-kart road racing from 1960-1969.Her hobbies were needlework, photography and, as a result of being a volunteer in the shop at the Museum of The Southwest in Midland, she began her interest in Native American Art & Crafts. She opened her store, The Roadrunner, in 1977. She was a member of Indian Arts and Crafts Association Albuquerque, NM from 1979 to 1995 where she served on the board for three years. She was also a member of SWIA,in Santa Fe, NM that produces Indian Market and she worked for Cristof’s Gallery in Santa Fe, NM for 15 years.She is survived by three sons, Robert Jr. (Robin) and Lindsay of Mechanicsburg, PA, Richard (Rick) and Linda of Bryan, TX, and Charles of Destrehan, LA. Five granddaughters, Lindsey Pena and husband Michael of Mansfield, TX, Allison Holley and husband Daniel of Midland, TX , Amanda Matthews of Bryan, TX, Madeline (Maddie) Matthews of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Kelsey Matthews of Destrehan, LA. Seven great-grandchildren, Tristan and Logan Holley, Alyse, Isabella, and Naomi Pena, and Leo Bettencourt and Troy Yung , and various nieces and nephews.Social Activities included Exxon Wives Needlework Group, Exxon Mobil Retiree Club of the Permian Basin and “The Dougetts” of Santa Fe, NM.Memorial services will be held on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 2:00PM at Parks-Faudree Chapel at Manor Park in Midland, TX with Rev. David Wilcox officiating. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Breast Cancer Society.Arrangements are under direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland.
