Elbert L. Strickland, 85, of Big Spring, died Friday, January 22, 2016 in Odessa. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Rev. Rocky Alexander officiating. Graveside services will be 3:00 PM Tuesday at the Old Runnels Cemetery in Ballinger, Texas.The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM Monday, January 25, 2016 at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.He was born November 9, 1930 in Ballinger, Texas. Elbert served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. He learned the art of welding from his father and worked as a welder in the oil field from 1959 until retiring in 1988. He then worked as the care taker at Camp Inspiration in Eastland for 5 years.Elbert served on the school board for Forsan ISD from 1969 to 1981. He traveled many miles to attend his children and grandchildren's activities. He loved hunting and fishing. He was a member of the First Church of God in Big Spring.Survivors include two sons, Ernie Strickland and wife, Laura of Big Spring and Bruce Strickland and wife, Jennifer of San Angelo; five daughters, Rebecca Caldwell and husband, Larry of Tye, Letha Smith and husband, Bob of Irving, Beverly Helferich and husband, Mark of Odessa, Amy Montgomery and husband, Kevin of Camden, Ohio and Aaren Bigham and husband, Doug of Lubbock; three sisters, Virginia Stanton of Dallas, Jannette Cunningham and husband, Larry of Lubbock and Marie Miller and husband, Larry of Midland; one brother Eddie Strickland and wife, Linda of Odessa; 14 grandchildren including, Wade Williams, Jarred Smith, Bradley Smith, Ashley Johnson, Lindsay Helferich, Ross Berry, Kimberly Teeters, Kaela Strickland, Robert Strickland and Sterling Strickland; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Myrtle Wiley Strickland; three sisters, Edith Strickland, Elizabeth Staley and Evelyn Morgan; and one brother, Eugene Strickland.The family would like to thank the staff at Parkview Nursing and Rehab and Glory Catchings and her staff for the excellent care they gave Elbert.Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Wade Williams, Ross Berry, Robert Strickland, Jarred Smith, Sterling Strickland and Bradley Smith.
