Eileen Vanderlee, 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 31, 2023. Services will be at St Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Austin at 2 PM on November 11th with livestream on the church’s YouTube channel.
Eileen was born May 8th, 1925 to Anton and Pearl Petree Kunc and grew up on a farm near Lenora, OK. She graduated from Enid High School, Oklahoma A&M (now OSU) and the University of Chicago – one of the first two women to receive an MBA there. She put her career on hold to marry and raise a family in Tyler, Texas, but later re-entered the business world as a teacher. She moved to Austin in the early 1990s, became a Certified Financial Planner and went to work with Martin Capital Advisors. She continued online stock trading into her 97th year.
Eileen is survived by her sister Carolyn Speer, son Keith, daughter Gail (Wes Strain), grandchildren Kelli (Rawad), Jeff (Miguel) and Emily, and great-grandsons Adam and Noah. She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 sisters, Lillian Muller, Cecelia Kouns and Billie Mayo. As a mother, she was both demanding and protective. As a grandmother, she was fun, if a bit unconventional. She took an active role in raising her grandchildren by providing housing and funds for education, and by taking them along to cultural events and vacations. She traveled the world into her 90s, loved classical music and the opera, housing several young artists for Austin Opera over the years. She believed in serious exercise and a strict diet, but ate fried chicken and tacos from Torchy’s when no one was looking.
The family would like to thank Dr Chau Le, Hospice of Midland and the staff of Helen Greathouse Manor and Cowden Cottage at Manor Park in Midland. Memorial donation suggestions include Austin Opera, Austin Classical Guitar, the Alzheimer’s Association and Hospice of Midland. Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory in Midland. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com
